Freedom, But For Whom?
By: Ishmael Kwesi Yamoah
And now,
Ghana,
my beloved country;
Yes,
freedom has been declared,
Emancipation,
Freedom has come,
but for whom?
The young Ghanaian who dreams of becoming?
The trader who seeks greener pastures?
Or the politician who, well, enjoys the fruits of our labour?
We claim Freedom but our finances are still in chains,
We celebrate independence each year,
Yet,
we remain dependent on the master.
And the youth dream of a better future outside the motherland.
The system has not provided enough for the young man to achieve Freedom.
Freedom at last, 69 years on.
Who did it really benefit?
We waste our resources and still blame the colonial masters.
We didn’t master the art of mastery before claiming the position of a master.
Was it rushed?
Time was supposed to tell,
but enough time has passed.
Freedom at last,
after 400 years in slavery
Where dreams were sold,
mirrors for gold.
We called the idea shallow,
yet we are not doing any better currently.
A country claiming Freedom,
yet entangled in debts.
Loans loans loans is the anthem.
God bless our homeland,
Ghana.
The cause of Freedom,
yet we hold on to the colonial masters.
Freedom at last,
but for whom?
The young voice that is still silenced because of traditions?
Or the one carrying degrees yet not hot enough for the job market?
Perhaps freedom was never a destination,
But a responsibility we abandoned.
Perhaps the chains did not vanish,
They only changed hands.
And so I ask again,
Not with anger,
but with hope:
When the drums beat for independence,
When the flags rise into the sky,
When we sing God Bless Our Homeland Ghana
Will the freedom we celebrate finally belong to the people?
