I grew up hearing about you
How accomplished, caring, wonderful you were.
Your warmth, your grace, your beautiful face
I know it all, don’t I?
I search my mind for our memories
Only to find not nearly as much as I thought we shared.
I see little fragments here and there,
Perhaps enough to prove that you cared.
I wonder: at what point did missing turn to longing?
What good is affection without connection?
You were the puzzle piece I never found,
So I created one without you
Without your love, without your sound.
And yet, fragments of you still haunt me,
Like glass inside my shoes.
But I would gladly bear the pain,
Because that’s all I have left of you:
Shards of something broken and faded,
But never truly gone.
And yet, despite the ache of it all,
Life moves on.
