Darkness falls.
Rain pelts the ground.
Love rises, challenges the night—
and darkness yields.
Light engenders hope,
warmth, the possibility of love.
Love brings joy—
Yet why is joy so fleeting,
Why so elusive?
Does the forest sing when we are absent?
Perhaps that is why, when we walk among trees,
the sounds that stir joy
arrive like gifts,
each one chocolate tasted for the first time.
The great challenge:
to allow love into joy,
to preserve joy without dulling its edge.
Is this the secret I chase?
The presence I can choose.
The force that drives all life?
The answer feels yes—surely—
yet the state is fleeting,
sometimes only felt in the ether.
Still, we can capture it,
if we want it hard enough.
It is a must,
if we are to be born again
with every breath,
each minute renewed.
