The Moon That Was Never Mine

I know we will never be together.
But let me speak,
while dejection embraces me.
In a sky crowded with stars,
You are still my moon.
Among the billions of faces,
It is your eyes I long for.
I long for your soothing touch-
Softer than the fine weave of Kente.
In the great sands of the Sahara,
You are the oasis I can't find.
I yearn for your presence,
Though the mirage told me I'll never have you.
I chased the moon,
But she kept her distance.
Yet my thoughts returned to you,
Like the Volta rushing to the Gulf.
The calm streets of Tema,
The rough roads of Ashaiman,
And the noisy streets of Madina
Have all forgotten your name-
But I hear you in every passing horn.
Loneliness sat beside me and whispered,
"You were only a friend."
Dejection told me to move on.
And still,
No matter how far you drift,
Your light refuses to leave me.
